Arkehia Documentation Center
MUAC University Museum of Contemporary Art (Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporáneo), Mexico City
I was commissioned to create this system for the exhibition of art archives by inSite to accomplish two objectives: firstly, to exhibit a selection of archives that had recently been donated to MUAC and were to be curated by Donna Conwell, and secondly, to create an expository system that could function flexibly for future exhibitions of the Arkheia Documentation Center’s archives.
This project was proposed as a continuous horizontal surface based on interconnected modular tables, replacing the idea of exhibition on walls and instead placing materials on tables of different formats and heights, which enables the design of multiple configurations, depending on the exhibition. The project works like a bookshelf or archive of information that can be opened, unfolded, and expanded, or even turned into a great table that houses and exhibits the documents and other types of archival materials. Composed of operable filing cabinets, showcases, and drawers, the project allows the spectator to enter the exhibited project, accessing different levels of information.
The exhibition system of Arkehia’s Documentation Center has been used in the following exhibitions: Itinerant Positions/Selections from the inSite Archive, curated by Donna Conwell as the inaugural exhibition of Arkheia at MUAC (2010); Visit to Olivier Debroise’s archive: between fiction and document (2011); Circuito abierto: dos experiencias editoriales – Fondo Felipe Ehrenberg (Open circuit: two editorial experiences- Felipe Ehrenberg Fund, 2012); Pola Weiss: La TV te va (The TV will, 2014); Con la provocacion (With provocation) by Juan Carlos Uviedo, experimentos teatrales de una paria (Theatrical experiments of a Pariah, 2015); Gran Creciente: Arte y Agitación en los años 60 – Corea del sur, Japón, Taiwan (Grand Crescent: Art and Agitation in the 1960s—South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, 2016).
